Gilles Roth concludes financial mission to India focused on strengthening bilateral relations in the financial sector

Finance Minister Gilles Roth visited India in 2026 from February 23rd to 28th on a financial mission with Luxembourg for Finance (LFF). The aim of the mission was to strengthen ties between the Luxembourg and Indian financial centres. India has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The Luxembourg delegation met with political figures and representatives of financial institutions and supervisory authorities.

In New Delhi, the Minister had a constructive exchange with India's Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman. This meeting was part of efforts to deepen financial relations between our two countries. Discussions focused on new avenues for bilateral cooperation and concrete synergies to be developed between the two financial ecosystems.

The Minister also met with the Chief Minister of Gujarat to explore opportunities for collaboration between the State of Gujarat, including GIFT City, and the Luxembourg financial centre. GIFT City is an international financial centre located in the state of Gujarat, designed to attract global financial players through an innovative regulatory framework, which aims to position itself alongside established centres by offering a competitive environment for international financial services.

As part of the Global Securities Markets Conclave 2.0, Gilles Roth gave a speech highlighting Luxembourg's role as an open financial centre in the world. He reaffirmed his desire to deepen partnerships with India and develop strong and lasting relations between the two financial centres.

In Mumbai, the Minister for Finance continued his discussions with key players in the Indian financial sector, including the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India. These meetings provided an opportunity to intensify dialogue with institutions playing a central role in the development of Indian financial markets. Discussions focused on both the development of capital markets and India's economic outlook.

This financial mission demonstrated that Luxembourg and India share the common goal of promoting open, innovative and resilient markets. Strengthening mutual understanding is essential to encourage cross-border investment and identify new avenues for collaboration, particularly in the areas of digitalisation and sustainable finance.

Gilles Roth said:

This mission symbolises the strong potential that Luxembourg and India have to deepen their cooperation in the financial sector. My discussions with representatives of financial institutions, regulators and public actors have shown that Luxembourg can be a strategic partner and a gateway to European financial markets.
