On 6 January 2026, the Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of India, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, paid a working visit to Luxembourg.

The programme for the visit included an audience with HRH the Grand Duke, as well as meetings with Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

During the meeting with Prime Minister Luc Frieden, discussions focused mainly on issues of mutual interest, with a view to deepening bilateral relations, as well as on major international issues.

The working session between Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Minister Jaishankar provided an opportunity to review the good bilateral relations between Luxembourg and India. With 5,474 residents, this diaspora is currently the tenth largest foreign community in Luxembourg.

Discussions also focused on the sectors of sustainable finance, digital technology and space, areas in which both countries see strong potential for further cooperation.

With regard to international issues, relations between the European Union and India were discussed. Minister Bettel emphasised the importance of this partnership and the need for ongoing dialogue. He stated:

‘The relationship between the European Union and India is multifaceted, and it is important to seize the opportunities offered by this partnership.’

He also emphasised that Luxembourg is in favour of the rapid conclusion of a free trade agreement between the European Union and India and expressed the hope that both parties can move forward in the negotiations in order to reach the signing of this agreement.
