Luxembourg meets Hollywood for new animation
A Luxembourg production firm has joined forces with Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie Pitt to work on a new animation about life as a young woman living under the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The Breadwinner will be jointly produced by Jolie Pas Production, Aircraft Pictures, Cartoon Saloon and Luxembourg's Melusine Productions, and is expected to hit cinemas in 2017.
Adapted from the novel by Deborah Ellis, the film portrays the life of Parvana, a young girl living under the repressive regime of the Taliban in Afghanistan.
When her father is unjustly imprisoned, the child is forced to disguise herself as a boy in order to do simple things like buy bread for her family.
“Millions of young girls like Parvana grow up today under oppression and conflict and help their families survive in these kinds of conditions. This story serves to remind us of the inestimable value of their contribution,” Jolie Pitt said.
The actress and producer of the film Unbreakable will be the executive producer of The Breadwinner. She will donate all of her earnings from the film to support the education of young girls in Aghanistan.
The film is currently in casting and pre-production stages. It was developed with the support of Telefilm Canada, the Irish Film Board, Film Fund Luxembourg, Corus Entertainment, Harold Greenberg Fund and the Belinda Sronach Foundation.
